Vassal

One who is the subordinate in a feudal commitment to a liege lord. Vassals may receive compensation in return for their feudal service in the form of materials or the promise of protection and security. Vassals may be required to provide military service, crafting, civil service, material resources or other services as a form of taxation or tribute.
