Day 1
- Herein will lie the records of our journey to discover the history we have lost. Let me see if I can say a bit about each of these people that will be travelling with me in our efforts. It is imperitive that we learn to trust one another if we are to be relying on each other. That, I think, will be our biggest obstacle. Of special concern is the Sheevra (And the Khurite, but the Sheevra is the only female and I fear that the men may consider it a right to violate her on account of her parentage). It has been put into our minds for so long that anyone not of Tindremic ancestry is inferior. I will admit that I have such a bias in me as well. I have always believed though, that a well treated slave is less likely to slit your throat while you slumber than one who is treated with disdain and malice.
- I am both sure, and afraid that the Sheevra knows how to handle herself, I just hope the others can show some restraint. Oddly, I think there may be a little of something else in her parentage. I cannot be sure as I have not, at least in a long time, had occassion to study her people in much detail.
- I speak of her first because she stands out more than the others. The man who looks like he patched his attire together from the cast offs of beggars eyed her a bit too long, which of a sorts got me agitated. But considering my origins, I cannot much blame him, despite the cultural mores I was raised on. That one, I do not remember his name but will be sure to learn it, seems a bit watchful. I am sure this can be of use to us, but I do hope that he does not bring eyes upon us that we can ill afford.
- Of our guide, there is little to tell. A noble man, typical Paladino of the Order that I have come to expect. Granted I have not met many, but I have come to trust in them. He seems to be capable, and respectful of my skills.
- The Khurite seems to have certain mannerisms one would not expect one of his kind to have. Again, my biases cloud my initial judgement, I will have to observe him a bit more before I write much about him.
- Quintus Aurelius Valen. He was sure to introduce himself to me with all the pomp and granduer of someone who is used to being better than those around him. I have seen many of his type in my years. I hope that this expedition will teach him some humility and that he will need to trust and rely on the rest of us. Then again, the fact of things may not always be as the appear to be. I will have to wait and see. The fact is, we are all shaped by forces outside of our control. I have come to think that this may be our downfall if we cannot overcome the biases that our lives have thrust upon us and unite as a team.
- I fear I include myself in those biases as well, to my shame, but a man cannot overcome who he is taught to be in an instant.
- This day is short, and uneventful. We have learned where we must go first and tomorrow we set out. I have said my farewells to my wife and daughter and the candle I have borrowed to write this grows short. I shall take down more as it occurs and as I have occassion.
